Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services
Excerpts from the Windows Server Section of www.microsoft.com
Remote Desktop for Administration
With Remote Desktop for Administration, you can administer a computer from
virtually any computer on your network. Based on Terminal Services technology,
Remote Desktop for Administration is specifically designed for server management.
In earlier versions, this technology was known as Terminal Services in Remote
Administration mode.
Terminal Server
In Terminal Server mode, you can access Windows-based applications or the Windows
desktop itself on virtually any computing device—including those that
cannot run Windows. For example, a user can access a virtual Windows XP Professional
desktop and x86-based Windows applications from hardware that cannot run
the software locally. Terminal Server provides this capability for both Windows
and non-Windows-based client devices. When a user runs an application on
Terminal Server, all of the application execution takes place on the server,
and only keyboard, mouse, and display information traverses the network.
Note: Terminal Server mode is not included on computers running the Microsoft
Windows Server 2003, Web Edition, which does, however, include Remote Desktop
for Administration.
Citrix Presentation Server
Excerpts from the Products Section of www.citrix.com
The foundation of the Citrix Access Suite™, Citrix Presentation Server™ is
the world’s most widely deployed presentation server for centrally deploying
and managing applications, especially in a heterogeneous environment, and delivering
their functionality as a service to workers, wherever they may be.
Presentation Server 4.0 significantly improves server performance and scalability,
providing instant return on investment and a better end-user experience. The
introduction of CPU utilization management and virtual memory optimization
help deliver a higher number of applications and up to 25% more users per server—enhancing
server-consolidation cost reductions. Application isolation environments
and virtual IP addresses enable a broader range of applications to run on Presentation
Server, and allow troublesome applications or multiple versions to run on the
same server. A completely new universal print driver prints up to four
times faster than before, allows use of advanced printer functions and enables
session printer policies for printing to the closest printer when roaming. For
heterogeneous environments, Presentation Server, Enterprise Edition now includes
Windows and UNIX products and unified licensing to make purchasing and licensing
easier. Finally, Conferencing Manager is now included in this product
offering, for real-time application conferencing, and shares unified licensing
with Presentation Server.

or network connection. For example, you can connect to your office computer
from home and work with files, programs, and resources as though you were in
front of your computer at work.
Remote Web Workplace (included only with Small Business Server 2003)
Allows all users to connect to their Windows XP Professional workstations
via a web browser. Small Business Server acts as a Remote Desktop “gateway,” allowing
secure access to many PCs from a single public IP address.
Accessing Exchange Remotely
Excerpts from the Exchange Server Section of www.microsoft.com
Exchange Server 2003 has built-in mobile features to help drive greater worker
productivity by facilitating mobile and remote computing scenarios. New and
enhanced mobile and remote access features in Exchange Server 2003 include:
Outlook 2003
Mobile and remote workers can communicate and collaborate on the go, and coupled
with the new user interface and security and support features, can communicate
and collaborate more productively.
Ø Cached Exchange Mode. Outlook 2003
clients using Cached Exchange Mode perform most e-mail-related tasks from the
local client computer, reducing the number of requests to the server for data.
After the full copy of a user mailbox is downloaded, Cached Exchange Mode significantly
reduces network bandwidth consumption between the client and server and removes
the need to restart Outlook to an offline profile when network interruptions
occur.
Ø HTTP access from Outlook. When used
with the Windows Server 2003 RPC Proxy Service and Exchange Server 2003, Outlook
2003 clients can connect simply using HTTP or HTTPS, thereby reducing the need
for Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) or dial-up remote access service (RAS).
If your remote users only need to access corporate messaging information, you
may not need to deploy VPN infrastructure.
Ø Performance enhancements. Enhancements
like MAPI compression and buffer packing reduce the number of requests to and
from the Exchange servers. Overall lower bandwidth consumption can lead to
site consolidation and render savings for the IT department.
Outlook Web Access
Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access 2003 has been improved for easier use
and a closer look-and-feel to Outlook 2003.
Ø Usability improvements in the user interface. Outlook
Web Access has been greatly improved with Exchange Server 2003, providing a
new user interface and features such as a spelling checker, additional views,
S/MIME encrypted e-mail messages, auto signatures, right-click mouse functionality,
quick flagging, the ability to create e-mail message rules, and junk e-mail
folder capabilities.
Ø Performance improvements to accommodate low-bandwidth situations. These
improvements are linked to a better user interface design, reduced bandwidth
requirements, and gzip compression between Internet Information Server (an
underlying component of Exchange Server 2003) and the browser client. Core
changes in Outlook Web Access greatly improve the performance of managing e-mail
by reducing the traffic needed to refresh views after the most common operations.
Ø Enhanced security when connecting over the Internet. New
features include:
Session inactivity timeout using forms-based authentication provides support
for secure logoff and timed logoff after a period of inactivity, even if the
browser is left open with a current session to the server. S/MIME support (Internet
Explorer 6.0 and Windows 2000 or later is required).Web beacon blocking makes
it more difficult for senders of spam to confirm e-mail addresses. When a user
clicks a hyperlink in the body of an e-mail message, Outlook Web Access helps
protect private information from being revealed to the visited Web site. Customers
can block access to all attachments or specific file types and can allow attachment
access only through specific servers. Additional security and deployment improvements
can be offered when using Exchange Server 2003 with Microsoft Internet Security
and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004. For more information, see the Better Together:
Using ISA Server 2004 with Exchange Server 2003 page.
Exchange ActiveSync
Mobile and remote workers can also stay connected while on the move. With
ActiveSync built into Exchange Server 2003, Windows Mobile 2002 and later–based
devices can synchronize with an Exchange Server mailbox with very little configuration.
Synchronization is over-the-air, can be on demand or scheduled, and provides
rich access to e-mail messages, schedules, and contacts. New devices that are
not Windows Mobile–based and are from companies that have licensed Exchange
ActiveSync also provide this capability.
A virtual private network (VPN) is a network that uses a public telecommunication
infrastructure, such as the Internet, to provide remote offices or individual
users with secure access to their organization's network. A virtual private
network can be contrasted with an expensive system of owned or leased lines
that can only be used by one organization. The goal of a VPN is to provide
the organization with the same capabilities, but at a much lower cost.

DTS provides installation and support for several VPN Solutions.

Overview
Remote Administrator is deployed on thousands of corporate PCs worldwide.
Among our clients are
companies where Radmin is the standard application for network management.
These corporations require cost-effective pricing as well as special terms
for upgrading. In answer, Famatech has created the Volume Licensing Program
to offer the best solution for companies/organizations requiring a minimum
of 200 licenses.

You view the remote computer's screen on your own monitor either in
a window or full screen. All your mouse movements and keyboard signals
are transferred directly to the remote computer. You work on the remote
computer just as if it were right there in front of you. According
to our tests and
user feedback, Radmin outperforms all other remote control software
in speed, usability and features.
With Radmin you can work with any remote computer so long as it is
connected to the Internet or your local area network. You don't even
need a fast network connection! A 56K modem is fast enough to provide
5-10 screen updates a second. On a LAN, real-time speeds of 100 - 500
screen updates per second is normal. Radmin’s speed can be adjusted
up or down to save your bandwidth. |
Radmin is extremely secure, employing 128-bit encryption for all data
streams. Radmin utilizes the ever-present TCP/IP protocol—the
most widespread protocol used in LANs, WANs and the Internet. This
means you can control virtually any computer from anywhere in the world.
When in "Full control" mode, you have complete, unlimited
control of the remote computer so you can launch applications, work
on documents, transfer files, even shut it down. Of course, that is
provided you are the system administrator or have been granted these
permissions by the system administrator.
From the beginning, our goal was to create the most secure remote
access utility possible. Our developers were able to achieve this goal
as well as boost Radmin’s performance right off the charts. |
|
Radmin is very easy to learn and use. Most of our users agree that
the major advantage of Radmin is its simplicity. By all reports, the
interface is intuitive and the program is very easy to use. Unlike
bloatware, Radmin has no useless 'value added' features that makes
it hard to work with, difficult to learn, or hobbles its performance. |

|
Radmin is very definitely the choice of IT professionals!
Key Features List
Speed
Radmin is the fastest remote control software available. It is optimized for
low-bandwidth connections such as modems. Connecting via modem, screen refreshment
rate reaches 5-10 updates per second. If connected to a LAN you can work on
remote computer with real-time speed, reaching over 100 screen updates per
second.
Functionality
Operating systems support
Radmin supports Windows 95/98/ME/NT4.0/2000/XP/2003*
Can work as a service
Radmin Server can work as a service under all supported operating systems,
which allows you to logon and logoff a user remotely.
Supports User Level Security
Radmin supports Windows NT/2000/XP/2003* user level security. You can give
the right of remote control to a specific user or user group.
Сhallenge-response Password Authentication
If Windows NT security support is switched off, access to a remote computer
is controlled by password. Remote Administrator uses a challenge-response password
authentication method similar to that used in Windows NT, but with more powerful
security keys.
Multiple connections
Radmin supports multiple connections on both server and client sides. It's
also supports the controlling of multiple remote computers and the viewing
of multiple sessions on one screen.
Variable view modes
Radmin view modes include Full-Screen, Scaled and Windowed. Full-Screen mode
lets you see the remote screen on the entire screen of your display. Scaled
mode lets you see the scaled remote screen in a window with a user defined
size.
Uses a Video Hook Driver
Radmin uses a video hook kernel mode driver under Windows NT 4.0 to improve
performance. This lets you work on a remote computer with an incredible 'real-time'
update speed (hundreds of screen updates per second). The Win2000/XP/2003 compatible
version of the driver will be included in the coming version of Radmin.
"Drag and Drop" file Transfer with "Delta Copy" feature
With Radmin you can easily drag and drop any files up to 2GB via Explorer-like
interface to or from a remote computer in encrypted mode. Radmin has a feature
used when copying files that allows updating only a part of the file which
is different on both machines. This feature is called "Delta Copy" since
only files difference ('delta') is copied. It allows continuing copy operation
after network faults from the place where fault occurred and not from the beginning.
This feature is used automatically when any file is being copied to or from
the remote machine.
Shutdown Remote Computer in One Click
Radmin lets you remotely shutdown a computer in one click without having to
connect in remote screen mode. This feature allows to save your time.
Remote Telnet access
Radmin server provides Telnet access to remote computers when it's Server
runs on Windows NT/2000/XP/2003.
Radmin has multilingual support using one file per language so it is not necessary
to download and re-install Radmin for each language. You can download multilanguage
resources here.
High Resolution Support
Radmin supports High Resolution modes of up to 2048 X 2048 X 32bit color.
Other Features
- Clipboard transfers to remote PC
- 16 color (4 bits per pixel) network transfer mode
- /stop command kills all running Radmin servers on the computer
- Optional 'Incoming connection' dialog box on server side
- Optional Tray icon on server side with computer IP address tip and current
connection list. Tray icon changes its state when an active connection persists
and a notification beeps when a user connects to the server.
- Close connection dialog in Viewer
- Some useful registry settings for system administrators to disable some
unnecessary Server functions (telnet, file transfer, control, the possibility
of changing server settings by a user, etc.)
- Can send Ctrl-Alt-Del to a remote computer
- Reduced network usage in minimized mode of the viewer's remote screen window
- Automatic disconnection of frozen remote screen connections
A lot of attention was paid to security questions in the Radmin design. Here
are some reasons Radmin operations are completely secure:
- Radmin supports Windows NT/2000/XP/2003* user level security.
You can give the right of remote control to a specific user or user group.
- If Windows NT security support is switched off, access to a remote computer
is controlled by password. Remote Administrator uses a challenge-response password
authentication method similar to that used in Windows NT, but with
more powerful security keys.
- Radmin prevents incorrect Server configurations. Radmin Server 2.2 does not
allow empty passwords.
- Server password protection. New Radmin Server 2.2 actively protects its
settings, which are stored in the system registry. Only a user with administrator
rights can access this registry branch.
- Remote Administrator works in encrypted mode where all data, screen images,
mouse movement and keys are encrypted using 128 bit strong encryption with
randomly generated keys.
- Radmin Server has a logging feature where all actions are written to the log
file.
- Radmin Server has an IP filter table so access can be
restricted to specified IP addresses and networks.
- Radmin has a self-testing code defense that protects its
code from being altered.
- All algorithms used in Radmin are industry standard: TWOFISH,
MD5.
- New, fully OS-integrated NT security system with NTLMv2 support.
Permissions for Radmin connections can be given to users from trusted domains
and active directories. Security settings interface is unified
with Windows standard.
- Smart protection from password guessing. This protection
includes such features as password anti-guessing security delays,
banning IP addresses with excessive number of password guess attempts, etc.
- Radmin Server 2.2 starts as a service and doesn't start as an application
on Windows NT/2000/XP*, which improves security.
(*) Radmin 2.2 is incompatible with the "switch user" feature of
Windows XP or Windows 2003. Radmin 2.2 works fine on Windows XP and Windows
2003 only if this feature is turned off or not used.
Radmin Security
Security is absolutely essential for any remote access software. We, at Famatech,
are dedicated to providing you the highest security levels possible. Our cryptography
engineers are very proud of pushing the technology and keeping Radmin the most
secure remote access tool available anywhere.
Security is built into the core of Radmin
- Any decent remote access software supports Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 user
level security. Radmin offers much more. Version 2.2. introduces new, fully
OS-integrated NT security system with NTLMv2 support. Permissions
for Radmin connections can be given to users from trusted domains and active
directories. Security settings interface is unified with Windows standard.
- Even when Windows NT security support is switched off, access to a remote
computer with Radmin is restricted by a password. Radmin uses a challenge-response
password authentication method (MD5 and Twofish). This method
is similar to the authentication method used in Windows NT, but uses a much
more sophisticated encoding.
- Radmin prevents incorrect Server configurations. Radmin
Server 2.2 does not allow empty passwords.
- Server password protection. Radmin Server 2.2 actively
protects its settings, which are stored in the system registry. Only a user
with administrator rights can access this registry branch.
- Radmin provides the highest protection possible against
third party intervention by using Twofish 128-bit encryption. This encryption
algorithm is known for its combination of speed, flexibility and
conservative design. All data, including screen images, cursor movements
and keyboard signals is always encrypted. The encryption is impossible
to turn off for Remote Administrator v2.1 and higher.
- Remote Administrator records all its actions and
events to a log file.
- Remote Administrator has an IP filter table that lets
you restrict remote access to specific IP addresses and networks.
- Radmin has a built-in code-testing defense mechanism that
prevents a program’s code from being altered.
- Radmin generates unique private keys for each connection
using a large random bit sequence that achieves unsurpassed protection. The
access password resides in the encrypted form and is never transmitted between
computers in any form, preventing third persons from intercepting or generating
the keys.
- Smart protection from password guessing. This protection
includes such features as password anti-guessing security delays, banning
IP adresses with excessive number of password guess attempts, etc.
- Radmin Server 2.2 starts as a service and doesn't start
as an application on Windows NT/2000/XP/2003, which improves security.
All these features make Radmin truly secure remote access software.
